(Below is an updated version of my earlier article on Free College.  Please learn the points or just share it with a fantastic young person)

To all young people: 

​You are amazing.  I love working with you, you have great potential, and there’s nothing better than watching you succeed.  That’s why I wrote this article, and whoever shared it with you cares more about your happiness than their agenda.  I guarantee it.

 
We will soon elect a new president, and the Democratic Candidate will offer you two years of free college.  Sounds good, right?  Two years without racking up student loan debt or begging for scholarships!  Two free years knocking out general courses, or working on a skill!
 
Hey, I think it’s great you want that.  It shows you want opportunity, and that’s what I want for you as well.  But if you’re willing to spend two more years in school, would you be willing to spend 10 minutes reading another point of view?
 
I’ll discuss three questions:  When do you start, who do you trust, and can we do better?
 
When Do You Start?
 
1. Question:  Right now, why do you get a High School degree? 
    Answer:  It’s the Starting Line for getting a job, or pursuing further education.

2. Question:  Why is this the Starting Line?  Why isn’t 6th Grade?  Or a Master’s Degree?
   Answer:  Because education is free through 12th Grade (13 years).  Whatever is free, everyone has.  Whatever everyone has, you need that as a minimum to get started.

3. Question:  So why pursue a College Degree?
    Answer:  To get an advantage—to get skills and credentials beyond what is free, beyond what everyone has.

4. So, if we make 2 years of Community College free, now where is the Starting Line?  15 years.

Thus:
    —You must endure 2 more years of education just to reach the Starting Line.
    —Even then, you’ll have no advantage in the marketplace.  
 
Here’s the math:  
               2 more years 
            + No Advantage 
            = 2 years of your life…LOST.


Oh, but it gets worse:  Increasing everyone’s “sentence” by 2 years costs hundreds of billions of dollars, and this is taxed from the free market that would eventually employ you.  That’s huge money taken directly from people who create jobs, or everyone else who buys products. 
 
So here’s the math again: 
               2 more years 
            + No Advantage 
            + Fewer Jobs 
            = Why are we doing this?


Oh, but it gets even worse:  The free market just can’t afford all these higher taxes, so we’ll also have to add billions more to the National Debt, which will all be paid off by—guess who?—young people!

So here’s the math one more time:
               2 more years  
            + No Advantage 
            + Fewer Jobs 
            + More National Debt heaped on young generations 
            = A Future where even Atheists beg for Christ’s Return


Who Do You Trust?
 
Meanwhile, what about the college faculty and politicians who say you “deserve” free college?  Who are they really helping?  These people know full well Free College sets your life back years with no benefit, limits job opportunities, and buries your generation deeper in debt. 
 
So why would they support this?  Follow the money.  Those hundreds of billions of dollars go straight to college faculty!  What a gravy train!  And not surprisingly, these people overwhelmingly donate money to the same politicians telling you this is a great idea.
 
So here’s the first question you should ask of any politician pushing Free College: “Do college faculty donate more money to you, or to the other political party???”
 
You’ll find that answer is always the same.
 
Can We Do Better?

Here’s an idea:  Instead of adding to your burden, let's subtract!  What if we stripped K-12 education down to the basics, mandating nothing beyond that which helps you succeed?  What if schools were structured to educate, not advocate?  
 
I call this, “Success Education.”  It’s education geared solely to your success.

Imagine this:  What if every required class was solely designed to help you succeed in the free market?  That means, unless you wanted to, you’d never have to hear teachers’ opinions on sex, religion, social justice, the environment, politics—no more advocacy, because none of those things helps you get a job.  Just math, English, science, computer skills—we’d only require what you need, not what we want you to believe.

Would there be electives?  Of course!  But they would be fully optional.  There would be no “you must take this many elective credits to be well rounded.”  Music, sports, theatre, shop class—these are valuable, and they’d all be available if you wish to use them.  But if you’d rather just get out there in the real world and start earning money, go for it!

Wait, you still want to learn opinions and philosophies?  Great!  But rather than let school boards with 51% of the vote force their views on everyone else’s kids, why not let families choose schools?  That way, everyone learns the basics, and any opinions above those are guided by families, not politicians with agendas.  Fair enough?

Here’s the best part:  If we make all advocacy classes from any side fully optional, then it won’t take 15 years to reach the Starting Line.  In fact, it won’t take 13.  It will take 11—unless you’d like an extra year for more electives.  So, we shorten your education “sentence,” lengthening your time making money and living life.  Oh, and this returns billions of dollars to the free market, meaning more jobs and less National Debt.  It’s win, win, win!

So there you have it:  Two fewer years and no listening to teachers’ personal agendas unless you want to.  If a family wants an extra year of High School, it’s covered.  You want teaching in the arts?  Enjoy!  You’d rather reach the Starting Line sooner?  Go ahead!  Start college…sooner.  Start making money…sooner.  You’ve got your High School degree, and you’re ready to roll, because I want you to live it up!
 
Conclusion
 
So what do you prefer? 
 
  • Free College, or Success Education? 
  • 15 years with no advantage, or 11-12 years with greater equipping for the real world? 
  • Becoming “well-rounded” according to the opinions of politicians, or becoming well-rounded” according to your own ideals, and those of your parents? 
  • Less free market money to employ you, or more?
  • More debt for your generation, or less?
 
I’m pushing for your success—no one else’s.  College profs and politicians aren’t evil people, but the fact remains they have hundreds of billions of dollars riding on your next vote…
 
…and honestly, so do you.
 
So “spend” your vote wisely.  And thanks for the 10 minutes.
