What is Conservatism?

Growing up, I thought Conservatives loved the rich, hurt the poor, polluted nature, craved war, and pushed their morality. "Why," I wondered, "would anyone want to be one?"

Later on, I'll explain why I switched sides. But for now, just know that none of the above stereotypes fit me. I don't resent the poor; my heart breaks every time someone loses a job. I don't crave war. Truth is, I love all people, as every one is a miracle I want unleashed, not controlled. I want them given a choice.

Yes, choice. For purposes here, when you decide your destiny in a situation, that's choice. If someone else decides for you, that's control. Your choice and their control are opposites, and this reveals a division in American politics - one I'll explore in the upcoming pages.

This is why I founded The Party Of Choice, because Conservatism is choice. While there are many Conservative groups - Tea Party, Republicans, Libertarians, Christian Right, etc. - they all value choice. Yes, they sometimes forget this. But choice does unite them, despite their differences, and The Party Of Choice seeks to remind them of their common ground. In so doing, I also intend to show all Americans the hope and potential to be found in choice, as well as the problems that come with too much control.

One more thing: Though focusing on Conservatives and Republicans, The Party Of Choice is not against Democrats. Rather, it opposes the Current Democrat Leadership ("CDL" for short), which has moved a proud party far from its roots. Most Democrats are wonderful Americans, and I share their heart for the downtrodden. I believe, however, that their party is now being led by people who don't value the great freedoms laid down by our Founding Fathers. The CDL just doesn't get America, because it doesn't get choice.

But then, for the longest time, neither did I.
