Welcome to The Party Of Choice
As time is a great treasure in this hectic world, I appreciate you spending some to read these thoughts on American Conservatism. Thank you.
I was not raised as a Conservative. Far, far from it. And after leaving Liberalism, I realized one thing above all others: I despise Liberalism, but I love Liberals. Many (though not their leaders) have good intentions, and I can understand why they prefer guaranteed social programs over non-guaranteed, free market paychecks. I think they are misguided--tragically, disastrously misguided--but at least we share compassionate goals.
I really wish there wasn't such a gulf between us.
But this gulf exists, held in place by a difference not so much of goals, but of desire. For beneath all the rhetoric and debates, I have come to see that ultimately, one side desires Choice, while the other desires Control. Yes, there is some crossover, as few people are 100% true to one vision. We can all stray. But overwhelmingly, Conservatism embraces choices for all people, whereas Liberalism embraces control over the choices of others. And this makes it hard to work together with Liberals. It's just so difficult to hammer out win-win agreements with those who want all the outcomes in your life--whether income or freedom or speech or possessions--controlled.
As for Conservatives, I know we too have disagreements on various issues. But I don't care. You see, whether I'm talking to Tea Partiers or "Establishment Republicans," Social Conservatives or Fiscal Conservatives with moderate social views, I always enjoy a deep unity of purpose with each of them. Why? Because even when they don't see the common vision they share, I do. Having experienced both sides, I know what unites my fellow Conservatives, just as I know what unites their opponents.
To understand this common vision, read through the "Get to Know Us" section. For an application of this vision to the issue of bigotry (which is a growing concern in America), please read "The Eyes of One." I think you'll like what you see. But whether you do or don't, please let me know your opinion.
Above all, please know this: I don't value people based on how much they agree with me. I value them because they are people--period. Whether Conservative or Liberal, you are my friend if you so choose to be.
Again, thank you.
