The 2nd Amendment: A Plan for Arming Citizens--By Guest Columnist Michael Turnbull

The Constitution of the United States had been in place for only a short time before the Framers saw the need for some fine tuning, and so they created the Bill of Rights.

As valid today as when written, the 2nd Amendment reads:

“A well regulated militia being necessary to the security of a free state, the right of the people to keep and bear arms shall not be infringed.”

This “well regulated militia” referred not to career soldiers, but to all U.S. citizens. How do we know this?  Examine the wording.  Making their intentions clear, the Founders twice affirmed, “the right of the people to keep and bear arms”.  Note two things:  First, for soldiers, it is an obligation and requirement to bear arms, not a “right”—so the statement applied to society as a whole.  Second, “of the people” certainly didn’t mean “of the military alone.”

The concept is simple enough.  An armed society provided a ready supply of volunteers for a “well regulated militia,” while making that society capable of protecting itself from Government hostility.

Having just seceded from England, the Constitution’s Framers saw unarmed citizens as easy prey for tyrannical rulers.  They were right.  Throughout history, dictators have disarmed their citizens—“for their own good,” of course—in order to impose their will.  Two of the more recent examples were Hitler and Stalin. But when tyrants like Hitler turned their sights on America, they saw an armed citizenry, not helpless peasants, so it was little wonder the U.S. mainland suffered no attacks by Japan or Germany in WWII.  Isoroku Yamamoto stated, “You cannot invade the mainland United States. There would be a rifle behind every blade of grass.”

Not surprisingly, countries passing strict gun-control laws have seen their crime and homicide rates rocket sky high, as defenseless targets tend to be, well, targeted.  But it is unnecessary to look outside our borders to witness the failures of attempting gun-control.  Liberal cities such as New York City, Washington D.C. and Chicago have both the strictest gun laws and the highest per capita homicide rates in the nation. “Gun Free Zones” have not and never will be deterrents for criminals hell-bent on destruction.  Shockingly—at least to misguided big city mayors—the bad guys have no trouble procuring firepower regardless of what gun laws are in place.

Ensuring an immediate solution to this problem is the armed citizen, so violent criminals agree, gun control makes their job much easier! These persons are cowards and always prefer “soft target” where they encounter no resistance.

Depriving Law-Abiding citizens the right to protect themselves is DENIAL of our Constitutional rights, and endangers everyone in our society. NRA statistics show that persons who legally carry concealed firearms are involved in .01% of crimes committed involving a gun. The concealed carry community is held to a higher standard, and performs admirably! Volumes of success stories exist where American Patriots exercising their right to “keep and bear” firearms are the number one line of defense in critical situations. Unfortunately, such success isn’t allowed in “Gun Free Zones”—witness very avoidable killing sprees like the Virginia Tech school shooting and the Movie Massacre in Aurora, Co.  While these tragedies could not have been avoided altogether, their outcomes could certainly have been altered and the carnage reduced—had just one legally armed citizen been there!

An Armed Society is a Polite Society.

Violent crime runs rampant in Australia and Great Britain—where firearm ownership is illegal—and Canada has finally abandoned ineffective gun legislation after wasting billions of dollars with minimal results. This is some of the same legislation that anti-gunners in America want to put in place now!

The Constitution’s Framers were geniuses with vision, and they knew the heart of man. Though they never saw the old west or contemporary Chicago, our Founding Fathers could easily have predicted Chicago to be the more dangerous of the two, as today’s Windy City inhabitants would trade anything for the relative safety of old Dodge City.

Once more, look at the 2nd Amendment:

“A well regulated militia being necessary to the security of a free state, the right of the people to keep and bear arms shall not be infringed.”

Well armed citizens who can protect themselves or supply a militia with ready recruits?  Sounds like safety to me.  Sounds like freedom.  Sounds like the Constitution’s Framers knew what they were doing.

Maybe we should listen.
